Cyclosporine<\/strong>\u00a0is a cyclic polypeptide with 11 amino acids obtained from a fungus. This medicine specifically inhibits proliferation of T- lymphocyte cells, production of interleukin and cytokines. In cell mediated immunity antigen is processed and presented to helper T-cells. This secretes interleukins and cytokines that cause proliferation cytotoxic lymphocytes. The mature cytotoxic lymphocytes (killer cells) lyse antigen-containing cells. This medicine selectively suppresses cell-mediated immunity and prevents graft rejection. It suppresses the responses of primed helper T-cells also and hence used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. It does not affect the bone marrow and reticuloendothelial system.
