Cimetidine is a selective H2 antihistaminic that blocks gastric secretion, cardiac stimulation, and bronchial relaxation. The bioavailability of Cimetidine is less because of first pass hepatic metabolism. Cimetidine is also used in the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and gastrointestinal bleeding. Tagamet is highly selective in action. Tagamet has no effect on H1 mediated responses. It blocks all the phases (like basal, psychic, neurogenic and gastric) of gastric secretion. The secretory responses to histamine, acetyl choline, gastrin, insulin, alcohol and food are attenuated. Tagamet amplify the responses to secretagogues.
